About: Davis Mountains Fitness & Training Camp (DMFTC)

The Davis Mountains Fitness & Training Camp is designed for those who have a desire to participate in physical activity and experience new challenges. Whether you are wanting to start a new fitness regimen or you are seeking a program to enhance your training, camp will provide you with various choices and an experienced staff to meet your goals.
Camp also provides opportunities to relax on your cabin porch, establish long-lasting friendships and escape from the stresses of your daily life. Camp is as serious as you make it, but always fun.

History

In 1980, Jack Jennings ventured out West and created a camp for runners called the Davis Mountains Running Camp. Within a few years other activities were introduced to the curriculum and in 1984, the name changed to Davis Mountains Fitness & Training Camp. A year later a nonprofit corporation was formed to ensure continuity in purpose, programs and organization. Activities at Camp continue to evolve as new interests emerge.

Setting

Camp is held at the Historic Prude Ranch, located approximately six miles west of Fort Davis TX on Highway 118. Fort Davis has a population of approximately 1,200 and will remind you of the old West town, before the appearance of mega malls and traffic jams. There are no theme parks, stop lights or theaters. At an elevation of 5,050 feet, Fort Davis is the highest town in the state.
Prude Ranch was established over 100 years ago as a ranch. For the last sixty years, five generations of the Prude family have run the ranch as both a guest facility and a working cattle ranch.
The mile-high altitude provides cool, pleasant summer days and crisp nights. August daytime temperatures in the lower 90's, night time temperatures in the 60's, along with low humidity, provide a great escape from the typical Texas summer heat.
Runners and cyclists have the opportunity to use the area's low-traffic roads and mountain trails on the ranch. Swimmers have both an indoor pool on the ranch and the spring fed pool at Balmorhea State Park. Hiking and other activities are available at the ranch and at nearby locations.
